Heavy rains and flooding in Mozambique have affected 600,000 people as of 19 January 2026, with projections rising to 1.1 million, according to the National Institute for Disaster Management (INGD). Prolonged flooding and controlled dam releases are worsening the situation, leading to widespread displacement. About 392,000 people have been forced from their homes, many of which are vulnerable adobe structures. The floods have also caused significant damage to health facilities, roads, and essential infrastructure, especially in Gaza Province, which accounts for 75% of those affected.
On 17 January, the Government formally requested United Nations (UN) support, including air assets for rescue operations and humanitarian transport, logistics support, civil engineering and disaster management expertise, and assistance to support the temporary restoration of critical access routes and flood control measures.
In support of Government-led relief efforts, humanitarian partners are scaling up lifesaving and life-sustaining assistance.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has prioritized needs and response in a plan, which consolidates the appeals from the humanitarian community, asking for $187 million to assist 600,000 people.
Take action: How the private sector can help
Businesses and private foundations have consistently played a vital role in emergency preparedness and response. The UN encourages private sector engagement in humanitarian efforts, and OCHA’s Private Sector Unit can provide neutral advice and facilitate public-private partnerships and collaboration.

1- Provide Flexible Funding (Highest Impact)
Financial contributions allow frontline responders to deliver what’s needed immediately, based on evolving needs and real-time assessments. OCHA does not raise funds for itself.
Priority needs include logistics, food, livelihood recovery, health, water sanitation and hygiene, shelter and education. Additional support is underway, including search & rescue.
