Where Technology and Innovation Meets Humanity: China’s Growing Role in Disaster Resilience and Humanitarian Response

China’s private sector and innovation community are playing an increasingly important role in shaping the future of disaster resilience. Participating in both a Rescue Robot Competition and a Private Sector Roundtable, I witnessed firsthand not only the speed of technological advancement, but also a growing commitment among Chinese companies and humanitarian partners to apply these innovations to real-world emergency response challenges. From cutting-edge solutions to more structured global engagement, these moments highlighted how innovation, scalability, and collaboration are coming together to strengthen disaster preparedness, response, and resilience worldwide.

Rescue Robot Competition: Advancing lifesaving innovation

AI and robotics are everywhere in today’s headlines, but from my perspective, the real question is how these technologies can move beyond commercial success to create meaningful social impact.

Invited by the Shenzhen Rescue Volunteers Federation, I joined the launch of the Rescue Robot Competition in Shenzhen. The competition is now open globally, with preliminary submissions due by June 30, 2026, and the final set for October in Shenzhen. So far, over 60 companies and 20 universities have expressed interest in participating, including JD.com and XPeng Motors. More than a contest, it offers a pathway: winning teams will connect with leading industry players and have their solutions recommended to national emergency authorities for potential use in national-level exercises.

What stood out most was not just the sophistication of the technology, but a clear shift toward solutions designed for real emergency response—where innovation can directly translate into lives saved.

The urgency is real. In 2025 alone, 326 humanitarian workers lost their lives, underscoring the need for safer and more resilient response solutions. In this context, robots designed to operate where humans cannot are no longer optional, they are becoming essential, serving as the first “eyes and hands” in dangerous, inaccessible environments.

Conversations with experts and companies reflected a shared recognition: disasters are becoming more complex and frequent, and Solutions, therefore, must be practical, durable, and ready to deploy at scale. Encouragingly, many innovators are already moving in this direction—focusing on needs-driven design, field usability, and the ability to scale solutions quickly through China’s strong manufacturing and supply chain ecosystem.

Private Sector Roundtable: From ad hoc contributions toward structured, scalable partnerships

A few days after the Rescue Robot Competition, I facilitated a Private Sector Roundtable in Beijing, convening 18 representatives from leading Chinese enterprises, philanthropic actors, and humanitarian partners to explore how private sector capabilities can be better integrated into global disaster response and humanitarian action. 

Lisa Doughten, Director of OCHA’s Financing and Outreach Division, opened the discussion by highlighting the growing strain on global humanitarian operations and the urgent need for more effective, efficient and sustainable solutions that China’s innovative, agile, and high-tech private sector can provide. 

What followed was a practical and forward-looking exchange. Participants shared concrete examples of mobilizing resources across sectors, from technology and logistics to insurance and green manufacturing. These examples reflect a strong foundation of good practice to build on. 

At the same time, there was a strongrecognition that unlocking greater impact will require more structured and collective approaches. Participants expressed strong interest in engaging with OCHA as a trusted broker to connect national capabilities with global humanitarian needs. There was a clear call for more regular dialogue and for establishing a more formalized platform to better link Chinese actors with regional and global humanitarian systems.

A shared direction: from innovation to impact

From the competition floor in Shenzhen to the roundtable discussion in Beijing, a larger story comes into focus: Chinese innovation is not only advancing rapidly, but also increasingly aligning with global humanitarian priorities.

The conversations point toward a more connected and purposeful future. I saw an inspiring appetite to move beyond ad hoc contributions toward structured, scalable partnerships that can reach the people and places where support is needed most. Ultimately, this is what matters: ensuring that innovation does not stop at invention but translates into real impact – helping save lives when it matters most.
